Is there a question in there, somewhere?

  • Hi Jim and Welshoak,

3-8-3 did extend the beam into the housing like I wanted I was hoping that the notch function would do the same. Because the shoulder function creates a housing the full width of the 8" column.

  • What command are you using to create the joint that is going all the way across the timber?
I've told you before to use "hidden" in 3-9-1 and it will not go all the way across, for a diminished haunch housing.
    I
f you don't want a full tenon the use the user defined tenon under 3-01-4 and set the variables to what you want.

If you're using the notch function to do a cut out in the post of only the size of the 3x timber then make sure you clear all sides to 0 before you select.

Other than that I don't understand how you're creating a notch all the way across your timber.

If you need further help, we'll have to do a connect computers teaching session and I'll show you.

  • Hi Jim,

If I use 3-8-3 the beam automatically extends into the depth of the housing which is nice. The only thing wrong with this is the housing gets cut across the full width of the 8†column. I know how to handle it with the notch function, but the notch function does not automatically extend the beam into the housing like the shoulder function does. So it appears the notch function has no capability to automatically extend the beam into the housing like the shoulder function does. Is this correct?

  • If you extend the beam into the post by the depth you want it in there, first, but any method, such as lengthen/shorten 2-01-1 then you just have to use the notch function to create the housing. And it will create the housing for just the portion that is in the post, if you do it correctly.

Another way to extend the beam into the post is to extend the beam by cutting perpendicular to view and then adding to the cut distance by the value you want it in the post.

Another way to make the beam longer is when you create it put a value of 2" in the box in 2-1-1 that says "Over length at end" or "Over length at origin," or both.

    Hope that helps.
