    Hi Planer,

I see now what you meant. I made an exterior wall in the top floor and then right-clicked on properties to change the side wall type to dormer. It worked, but now I am not able to connect the side wall's corner with the dormer gable wall corner.

Also the left side dormer wall in the leftmost dormer is a continuation of the exterior wall from below, broken by the roof SIP panel so i overlapped a dormer wall on top of this exterior wall from below. It works, but I wonder if this is the right way to do it or will I have some unexpected problems later on. Also, I have the same problem connecting the two corners.

When I use the "wall connection options" in the dormer editor it doesn't seem to do anything other than close up the opening in the middle dormer!!

    cheers,

    Hi Planer,

I did try, but I think perhaps I input the wrong stuff into the function. I am thinking I might need to play a bit with the set-up for the opening and input of dormer walls?

    will keep you posted.

    thanx,

Hello everyone, and happy new year,

I am trying to add exterior side walls to a set of gable dormers. The problem is I need these side walls to start on top of the roof SIP panels (where the red lines show in the attachment), but I don't want them in the interior space of the house (where the red crosses show in attachment).

I will design, eventually, the trimmer rafters that will pick up the weight of the exterior side gable walls.

I have tried a number of things, but nothing has worked out so far. Any ideas?

    cheers,

    hello all,

is it possible to edit an existing chimney? I have changed the height of the roof and would like to shorten the length of the chimney. I have tried to use d-cam tools (as if it were a timber) but no luck.

do i have to erase it a re-do it, but with a different height?

    cheers,

    Hi Joachim,

I don't care much for the "foot" part of the imperial system either, but I do like having fractional inches, so instead of using 6'-3.1875 i use 75 3/16.

would it be possible to see this format in Dietrichs? perhaps if it were included in the future it may give less trouble than the foot-inch format?

    cheers,

    Hi,

I think your English is excellent. It is not my native language either so I know it can be problematic sometimes.

Joachim, i am sorry I don't know how to explain this little kink more clearly, i just tried this on the three computers we have dietrich's installed on and it does happen.

I do understand that the last situation is saved for when you open the dialogue box again, and yes, all our computers save the last situation as well. Once you use 0.0...1 the next time you open the dialog box it rounds it off to 0, so from there on there is no problem, until you change that 0 to something else, and then later on you try to use 0 again.

If you follow the steps (or have someone else help you) as outlined in my last message i am positive you will be able to replicate the "issue".

    Hi Joachim,

I believe you may replicate the issue. i tried it in a new position, and with several different plate definitions.

to get to what the function 5-3-2 looked like when i started ("distance in ground G" grayed out with no value)

    1) 5-3-2
    2) delete any value you may have in "distance in ground G"
    3) click on any other property such as obholz. this will gray out "distance in ground G" and activate height of "plate's top edge O"
    4) enter an appropriate height for "plate's top edge O"

Now as per Planer's instructions (thank you again):

    1) delete the value in "plate's top edge O"
    2) click on any other property such as obholz. this will gray out "plate's top edge O" and activate "distance in ground G".
    3) enter 0
    4) click on any other property you still have to change, or click on "all roof sides", "full lenght", etc to exit the function and create the plate

you'll see that "distance in ground G" is grayed out again with no value, and "plate's top edge O" becomes active again.

I don't believe i made an issue at all of this, but there you have it. i will leave it up to you to try it with decimal units if you so feel inclined

    cheers,

    Hello all,

I just found out that a dormer template I saved at work didn't migrate with the other files. Either I did something wrong (missed copying something?), or there is another file or folder that I need to copy from one computer to the other.

    Any ideas?

    cheers,

i just tried to use the function with a ground distance of 0 from the wall reference axis and it just won't let me. so, unless there is something i am missing again i have to enter something like 0.00000001 to make it work

i am starting to warm up to the software but this is another example of its quirkiness (which by the way is not a derogatory term)

    cheers,

    Hello all,

when using 5-3-2 (define roof) in the roof design module "distance in ground G" is grayed-out. The only way to specify location of a plate is by giving the top-of-the-plate height.

I know it can be accessed if I were using a roof profile, but I don't really need to set one up for this project.

I have come across several situations already where it would have been far more efficient for me to use Distance in ground.

please, could anyone tell me how to access this input directly?

    cheers,

    hi planer,

thanx again, your knowledge of dietrichs is astounding. i have given up and started the project from 0 again. i will be much more cautious from now on. i might pack the whole project after every session and send it somewhere safe. what do you think? any other strategies? (new thread?)

if nothing else, after the third time i am getting more comfortable with the software, it took me a fraction of the time to get to where i was prior to my disaster,

    cheers

Hi Planer, unfortunately i don't think that is the problem in this case.

I just tried a demo recovery program and this is what came out.

the non-highlited files are the ones I created last nite, or older files modified by dietrichs as i was working on the project again. so they are out there, somewhere.

i just know nothing about the file extensions, so i don't know which ones i should try to recover, or whether it is worth the money (just under $100 !!) i have an option to open them from the window (and then i could use "save position as") but i don't know which dietrichs exe i should associate with which extension.

in any case i am going to start the project from 0 again. i'd like to know for next time how do you back up in dietrichs, and where do you find the back-up files?

    thank you

    Hi Joachim,

I looked in the trash bin and found not one file...

in any case i sort of figured what happens. for some reason (something i am doing wrong, i am sure) sometimes the projest saves outside of its project directory, so when i expand all my directories I'll see the project replicated elsewhere. last nite it happened again, so i right cliked on my project and copied it to the clipboard (just in case), then i went to the replica of the project which had appeared one directory level up and deleted it.

it dissappeared...together with all the positions in the actual project i was working on !!. only the "shell" of the project was left, basically a project with no positions.

of course my copy to the clipboard was useless, since the original was deleted.

i don't know if any of this makes any sense to you.

    hello Planer and Joachim,

i wish a could act upon your replies. unfortunately i just erased my whole project by mistake. it is amazing what one absent-minded click can do.

In the menu program I did have set 5-3 settings-path to "delete: move files to trash bin" but this didn't seem to help.

I'm still a bit in shock, is it possible to recover it? are there any back-up files anywhere that are automatically generated i can use?

    hello all,

is it possible to transfer new list type designations from one computer to another. they didn't carry along even when transfering the DBA HBR and WINVOR folders from work to home.
i am sorry i keep insisting on portability but it is crucial for me as i must be at home during part of my work day...
