Hi Rob, you asked me for a translation of this post. Well, I'll do my very best...

In the german original thread someone wanted to know, if it was possible to insert an own picture in OpenGL in order to get a "real view" of the building in a landscape. That's what I answered:

It is possible to add an own picture and show it in OpenGL (for example you replace a texture, that you do not nessessarily need. In the Gif-dirctory you find some "free_textures" that are made for this purpose. Be sure to save your own picture with exactly the name of one of these files (f.e. "textur_0.bmp"), as these file names are used in the internal texture-sets.) After replacing the picture, the software needs a restart to load the changes.
Well, even if you get your photo onto a beam or panel, the result will never really look true, because it is very difficult to find the correct scale and point of view.

For a more pleasing result it will be better to add the building into the photo by using a photo-software (like PhotoShop, PaintShopPro, CorelDraw...). It should be able to work with different layers.

Now, for beginning you need a photo of the ground where the building shall be placed. When you take the picture, imagine the building needs some place on it, so set the margins wide enough to fit the planned building and choose an interesting view. In the foreground should not be too many trees or bushes, as it causes much work of retouching.

Open the background picture in your photo-software, then switch to Dietrich's OpenGL and turn/push/zoom the model to find the original point of view. If it will not fit perfectly, try an other view angle in OpenGL settings. If you have planned an extension to an existing building, the perspective view should fit exactly. Open the photo and add some adhesive papersheets onto your monitor, to assign some existing borders and edges. Then in OpenGL it will be much easier to find the correct point of view. Save the OpenGL picture with high resolution (at least factor 2 or 3).

In the photoprogram, add this picture in transparent mode into a new layer. The program should also be able to stretch the single edges of the choice (if it only can do rectangular operations, it will not be enough). Fit the model into your picture perfectly.

Now you can start the retouching. Erase unvisible areas of the building (baseplate, fundaments...). If there are things in the foreground, you have to retouch them. Surely it will take some time of exercise to get a nice result. In a good photoprogram you can define many settings of the eraser: size, shape, opacity, grade...

Save your results in different file-formats: use the standard file format of the photoprogram for future changes (layers and special settings will be kept). For presentation and distribution save it as jpg-file.

In Dietrich's photogallery you will find several of my pictures that were created in this way.

I wish good luck and success to you and many wonderful creative pictures for the gallery!
